Grimace@KSCU: The Final Month… grimace has left the building.

Hope anybody out there reading this has enjoyed listening to the show anywhere near as much as I’ve enjoyed playin’ the choons for y’all.

So sad :( It seems like a lot of personalities are packing it in, what’s up with that?

  2. grimace says:

i wouldn’t in a billion years consider myself a personality. i think that whatever the opposite of a personality is makes for a better description of me. heheh. i’d much rather play records than talk.

as for other folk? i haven’t heard of any kind of exodus. I caught Audiokon’s show on saturday and he mentioned that he was doing his final show… so he seems like the only one who has specifically said he’s not doing a show anymore.

they actually just sent the new schedule today and i only see a few noticeable differences… Faco’s time slot is vacant at the moment (which may or may not mean anything). i don’t know what dj innalect’s real name is so i can’t tell if he moved slots or is off the schedule completely. savvy is moving out of the area so there has been some juggling on monday/tuesday afternoons…

tuesday remains the red headed stepchild of the schedule though… no DJ from monday at 11pm ’til tuesday at 3pm which is part of why i opted to stop doing a regular show. it’s like working in a vacuum… the station is empty when i get there… empty when i leave… there’s very little interaction with station staff or listeners… it kinda reminds me of some lyrics from one of my favorite New Order songs “Your Silent Face”.

    Sound formed in a vacuum
May seem a waste of time
It’s always been just the same
    No hearing or breathing
    No movement no lyrics
    Just nothing

Haha, man, I never imagined. Whenever I listen it just sounds like a big happy family. Also, you added a ridic number of shows to the playlist a while back, so I end up listening to you the most (I generally catch at least part of the live show, too).

Everyone keeps referring to “last show” in some regard, because of the break, and I might be tripping, but I wanna say that you, Faco, K-von, and yeah, I think audiokon, too.

Also, your radio personality is pretty distinct. I would say, whereas Faco is just carefree happy rambles, you’re like “leaving pretty good news on a friend’s voicemail.” Cheerful, excited, but there’s a deadline.

Anyway, yeah, it’s gonna be weird-sad hearing your voice if there’s no chance of it actually being you on the other side. Maybe I should quit nostalgifying the issue and call the training director or something psh ;P

i think yr “happy family” comment is pretty accurate for every time slot except the one that i’m in. heheh. in the 16 or 17 months i’ve been back at KSCU i’ve never had anybody before me and aside from the quarter that brent/tiamo 1 was on after me I never really had anybody to follow me… RKN did a few erratic weeks over the summer… maddgirl did a couple weeks this fall… nothing consistent though and as much as i like to whine about being an analytical person rather than a creative person i need SOMETHING to set my course by. otherwise “Sound formed in a vacuum may seem a waste of time it’s always been just the same” kicks in…

the reason i added those old show recordings to the studio computer (they’re actually not in the *official* comp playlist so DJs who play them do it because they want to rather than just because it’s in the comp) is because i got sick of hearing either the same cd on loop ALL NIGHT or the same 12 hours of music in the official comp. I think the first batch of my stuff that i put in there was 55 hours long… then the next time i updated the podcast it became 75 hours (lots of newer stuff and then i also tossed out the pre 2010 stuff) and then i updated again… i think now there are 90 hours available for over the air play out of the 190 hours that are downloadable from the podcast here.

all because i was sick of hearing peter lo’s lame ass “opium den” mix as i was coming in… heheheh. I’m actually almost done with an applescript (i’m having an issue with shared playlists over the network) that will automatically insert all the station IDs and PSAs at the appropriate times… that way they can both be free of my non-personality-havin’-talkin’ AND have a multi-thousand song comp that can be set to shuffle (read: is safe from dumbasses who can’t read instructions and who don’t get that sorting the playlist by Artist or album or song title and pressing play is not the proper way to leave an overnight comp.)

i think yr right about the “last show” references being to the holiday break… the station is closed a fair bit over the next few weeks and people are going out of town, etc. K-von is definitely listed on next quarter’s schedule though. I think audiokon said something about throwing up a weekly mix online someplace in lieu of the radio show (kinda like what i threatened above… getting back to my old podcast).

i think yr assessment of my talkin’ bits was remarkably on point. that’s EXACTLY how i feel when i have to talk on the radio and i *hate* leaving voicemail… heheh. i don’t even bother anymore. if i get voicemail i hang up and text the thing i needed to say (much like i text the playlists here. hehehe)

and i’m not specifically *leaving* the station at the moment… just not doing a regular show (and i might need to damn you for making me regret that decision ya bastard.. that’s the problem with *decisions* made in a vacuum… once another voice comes in it opens up a whole ‘nother thought process).

    hrrrm…

Man, I have no idea why but this makes me mega sad too. Maybe because despite there being a chance (and a strong chance if I have anything remotely to do with it) of you resuming the podcasts, it’s an entirely different experience when you hear someone live over the air, shuffling through tracks and playing them in real time. It just seems more special for whatever reason.

But that’s not to say the podcast isn’t special in its own right, it’s just that, as listeners during the live show, we have a teeny bit of insight/feedback into what’s happening when you select a track at a certain time. It makes listeners seem like they are a part of something—even though we might just be sitting on our rear ends doing absolutely nothing!

But as for the whole radio personality bit, you do make an effort to share your knowledge and personal commentary about music, which lends to a “trip down memory lane” experience for all of us. You can’t reproduce those kind of moments. Its kinda magical. And very much appreciated.

Hopefully you’ll continue to guest DJ here and there. Looking forward to hearing what’s next. Always a fan.
